3 Ways to Kick-Start Your Morning
Mornings are all about routines – or lack thereof for some people. You wake up, turn on the news, read the newspaper, start the coffee, brush your teeth, shower, etc. etc. Having a routine is one of the easiest ways to free up your mind for more useful work.
Today I wanted to share with you some easy ways that you can supercharge your morning routine and fuel your body, and mind, for hours and hours after you leave the house.
Bulletproof has been around for a while now. I myself had my first cup a little over 2 years ago. And it SIGNIFICANTLY changed my mornings. Here’s what you need to know…
- Brew 1 cup (8-12 oz.) of coffee using filtered water, with 2 1/2 heaping tablespoons freshly ground Coffee Beans – I’ve used a variety of beans but if you want the purest, least moldy bean look to Bulletproof itself.
- Add in 1-2 tablespoons of Brain Octane to the hot coffee – I’d recommend starting with 1 tablespoon
- Add 1-2 tablespoons grass-fed, unsalted butter or ghee – Kerrygold is best! It comes in a silver package and can be bought at most grocery stores – again start with 1 tablespoon
- Mix it all in a blender for 20-30 seconds until it is frothy like a foamy latte
You’ll be amazed at how your body and mind responds to getting the healthy fats its been starved of and after a couple of weeks your digestive system will turn into a fat burning furnace!
Why you should give it a try
If you’re like most people you don’t eat anywhere near enough fat. Putting two forms of fat in your coffee plus the added caffeine kick-starts your body’s fat metabolism. This will do two things:
- You’ll feel “ON” – your mind will function much better and you’ll have long lasting energy without the crash after a typical cup of coffee
- You’ll jump-start the process of ketosis – when your body uses fat for fuel instead of carbs
Your brain needs sugar and carbs are the easiest, readily available source you give it. Carbs yield 4 calories per gram while fats yield a whopping 9 – more than double the amount of energy!
The awesome thing about the Brain Octane is it’s an MCT fat – medium chain triglyceride. Other examples of MCT fats are foods such as avocado’s and coconut oil – there’s even MCT oil as a supplement. An MCT fat is absorbed in the body just like a carb meaning you get readily available energy BUT you also get a lot more energy! Your belly and your brain are happy!
It may seem crazy to put butter and oil in your coffee, but don’t knock it till you try it!
The first thing I hear people say in response to this proposal is “what about cholesterol?”
Well lucky for you the government is finally getting hip to the game and has even issued statement saying that Cholesterol Has Finally Been Removed From The “Naughty” List. You can click the link to read that article and the benefits you can gain from consuming foods such as full-fat dairy products, butter, and avocados.
Stop being a scaredy-pants and just try it – it tastes a lot better than you think!
Following suit with our full-fat conversation avocado toast is something that I’ve actually stolen from my wife! She pretends to pay little attention to my concoctions in the kitchen but inside she’s taking mental notes for her own recipes – although I think she found this one online…
1-2 slices Ezekiel toast – important that it’s sprouted grain bread!
½ or 1 whole avocado – depending on how many slices of toast
½ or 1 tablespoon chia seeds
Unlike bulletproof coffee, this won’t kick-start ketosis because you are giving your body carbs in the source of Ezekiel bread. That being said, you’re still getting a TON of healthy fats here in the avocado and chia seeds. And if you’re the type that “needs” to eat something in the morning than this might satisfy your craving.
I’ll occasionally mix an 8-10oz glass of whole fat milk – cream on top – with a scoop of RAW chocolate protein powder and enjoy with my toast. That way I’m getting more of a complete meal in.
Note to self: I’ve tried bulletproof coffee AND avocado toast… it’s too much too, too much. Stick to one or that other when looking to kick-start your morning.
I’d categorize meditation along the same lines with avocado toast and bulletproof coffee because in my mind they’re all alternatives to what you’re likely doing now.
Mindfulness has been proven to help a vast majority of illness and in addition give you more energy and make you feel better about your day, yourself, and your life!
If meditating is new for you, I’d suggest trying an app called Headspace. It’s a great way to step into meditation and it’s free… for your first 10 sessions.
If meditation seems like a big step for you, try another tip and start off every morning writing 3 things you were thankful for the day before.
This puts your mind in more of a reflective state and allows you to slow down a bit. It’s also great to give thanks to the people in your life that help make your life so great! I’d created a habit of enjoying my bulletproof coffee and writing my thankful list every morning.
You may not be able to control what happens the rest of the day, but at least with each of these tips you’ll be fueled and prepared for whatever your day brings. Not to mention you’ll probably start to look better as well.
